Whats the deal with the gnats in the winter? Are they coming in off produce from the stores?

After fighting for weeks with tiny flies (are they house gnats?) we finally found the brown, nearly liquid, banana and got rid of it. No more flies. After that I stored some bananas in the cold oven (knew you were not supposed to store them in the refrigerator). Forgot them and a few weeks later when I opened the oven door, was almost knocked down by the swarm of tiny flies! From that we concluded that maybe the eggs were on the bananas when we bought them.
