for 11 years and is presently head of the Fruit Program. His areas of Interest include fruit tree propagation, hybridization, and
breeding for improved cold-hardiness and disease resistance. |

Accordoing to Dr. Bors, "Our fruit program is the
coldest place in North America where many fruit crops are being bred. We
are the only major fruit breeding program for the Canadian Prairie.
"Our program has breeding and research projects
with Dwarf Sour Cherries, Haskap, Saskatoons, Apples, Strawberries,
Plums, Pears, Hazelnuts, and several other fruit crops plus some
ornamental species. Ornamentals include coleus, crabapples, Sandcherries,
and begonias."
Research emphasis: Fruit breeding,
mechanically harvested fruit crops, value added processing, and disease
resistance. In the last 11 years 6 cherry, 4 Haskap, 3 raspberry and 4
apple varieties have been released from their program.

member to 6 fruit groups.

average he is invited to speak 10 times per year.

They have cooperative projects in Mongolia,
Japan, Russia, Poland, Belgium and Norway. Mostly these involve
exchanging germplasm and testing their varieties.
